It's not a jam, it's marmalade!
The text below re-hashes some of the offers and suggestions from the FSW forum. Any ideas not mentioned here are welcome, just e-mail Jim to have them included.
In addition to the camping and shooting festivities, I'd like to see this Freedom Festival include some speaker sessions. Maybe we could get Ron Paul to come speak. Or Lew Rockwell. I'd like to invite Burt Rutan and some of the other new Space Tourism industry entrepreneurs.
The HiSovs organization has already hosted two Winter dance parties, so many FSW folx know about us.
Fun events - I think the 2006 jamboree was exceptional because, among other things, Steve and Renee brought fireworks and a big telescope. Some of us also enjoyed setting up to watch the film "Serenity" using Jim's Jeep, Sterling's power adapter, Boston's laptop, and Victoria's DVD of the film. I'd like ideas on what else we can do in camp that is fun.
Range safety - we have a property with an on-site range. I'd like volunteers to take up the issues related to keeping the range safe, and also to cleaning up lead and brass during and after the event. Logically, it would be good for people who want to take and teach classes on the range to involve themselves in this area.
Classes - if you want to teach a class, feel free! If you want to charge a fee, feel free! Classes in gun safety, target practice, open carry dos and don'ts, and other stuff welcome. I plan to offer a course in sky watching, both naked eye and with telescope, probably Friday night (weather permitting).
Sessions for the meeting room - I would like to see some introductions to FSW, some recruiting brainstorming, and some sessions on home schooling. Any other topics?
If you want this Summer's festival to be about something, to be connected to something, to involve a video-link to another event, to include a band, or anything else, please let me know. Or, feel free to organize it yourself.
Jared comments: * I and Terrible Claw would like to run a basic self defense class. We would do some Krav Maga, some combatives, and some other close contact-type stuff. This could be augmented/supplemented as others see fit --- basic grappling if people feel like rolling around, western boxing, stick fighting, etc. TC and Scofield Kid might even be persuaded to demo some medieval sword work.
* I'd also like to volunteer for range clean up if it means I get to keep brass. Grin
* I recently picked up a book on various team games; the things you remember from camp -- like how many people can you get to stand on a box, trust exercises, red rover, etc etc ... I'll copy some of the funner looking ones and see what I can put together. What is the set up at the location --- is there a grassy area where group activities could occur?
Yes, in fact, there are several grassy areas for pitching tents and for group activities. Plus, the private land is adjacent to Forest Circus and BLM lands, I believe. So, it should be possible to spread into those areas for temporary functions. Obviously we peons cannot be permitted to camp on such land, nor harvest timber there, nor live there, nor collect ancient pottery or embedded minerals, but I think we are free to walk on those lands, and perhaps do a bit of kickboxing or red rovering on them.
Mama Liberty's Class: I will offer a very informal class, specifically for women who would like an introduction to handguns and self defense. I specialize in helping those who are fearful or who have never handled a gun. If you have a wife or girlfriend, daughter or friend (any age) who might benefit from this, please encourage them to at least come and talk to me in camp. I'm happy to talk to the gentlemen too, of course, but this class is just for ladies so they will all feel free to express themselves and discuss things they might not be comfortable with if the gentlemen were there.
This is a NO pressure, no argument, non-threatening type introduction. There are no requirements except the willingness to consider new information, and there is no cost to participants.
Any who wish to have a live fire session on the range will need to provide ammunition or purchase it, of course. I'll have plenty of .22LR with me. Anyone who has a .22 pistol or revolver we might borrow, please PM. I have one of each, but might need more.
Mac on FrontSight: I could certainly speak on the topic of Front Sight. I've taken 12 courses there and both my wife and I are "First Family" members (although she has never gone and probably never will). I even have some Front Sight DVDs I could hand out to a few interested parties.
The sessions in the hotel conference room would include speakers on a variety of topics. You may remember that DTOM spoke about open carry experiences while we were at last year's jamboree. That would be an excellent example. I would like to include other types of sessions, on topics related to freedom, space science, home schooling, cooking, life in Wyoming, new business ideas, the Ron Paul rEVOLution, and anything else members of FSW would like to discuss.
You are certainly free to do just as you please. If none of the sessions in the conference room interest you, fine. If camping outdoors is your idea of a great time, excellent. Camping is on the list of things to provide, along with a major meal Saturday night at the camp site. Access to a gun range is another thing that we seek to provide.
Not everyone, though, enjoys camping. And some people who really love camping also like to take a hot shower or bath from time to time. So, I think working with a hotel or motel business, as well as a camp ground, provides us with more presence in the community, more options for different folks, and more features and benefits.
Mama Liberty notes: I'd like to see our "swap meet" expand and grow to a flea market, with both trade stuff and food booths. Trail mix? Cowboy donuts from the campfire? The possibilities are almost endless.
We have an offer for a shooting class for beginners. I think there is one other shooting class on offer. I would be enthusiastic for a tracking class, and a skinning class if some hunter wanted to teach either. We have one offer for a first aid class subject to two other people I haven't contacted about it, yet, not being fussy about it being taught. I am planning to organize a star party on Friday evening and an astronomy class on Sunday evening. I am planning a class on model rocketry, possibly to qualify for the Scouting merit badge in rocketry, on Sunday afternoon. The land owner welcomes fireworks contingent on weather - if the ground is damp, they can be set off, if the ground is dry, no. I think Don Wills wants to organize some discussions of politics, which would happen at the same time as our event, but, since HiSovs is not a political outfit, won't be sponsored by us. Both Don and I are working on web sites to promote the event.
